My name is Peggy Flanagan, I’m an Ojibwe woman, and I was just chosen by my colleagues to chair the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association. This means I will be the first Native American woman to chair a national party organization.

Earlier this year, my daughter asked why I’m always so busy; why I have so many meetings, boards to serve on, and planes to catch.

I told her what I’m telling you now: when you’re the first, you have to show up — so that you won’t be the last.

I’m often the only woman and Native person in these decision-making rooms. If I don’t show up, then we don’t have representation. And if I don’t do a good job, it’s an excuse to not include us in the future.

I’m showing up so we can change the face of the Democratic Party and elect leaders truly reflective of our communities. Can I count on you to show up with me by chipping in $10 before our huge End-of-Year Fundraising Deadline so we can elect more diverse leaders in 2024?

I may be the first, but I refuse to be the last.

Will you show up with me for a truly reflective Democratic Party?

I look forward to working with you.

Sincerely,

Peggy Flanagan
Chair of the DLGA
Lt. Governor of Minnesota
