Friend,
On December 8, President Joe Biden has a giant opportunity to address a major problem affecting every American.
On that day, the terms of two Trump-appointed members of the USPS Board of Governors will expire, and President Biden can install two pro-public agency governors who will be the deciding votes to fire Trump Postmaster General Louis DeJoy.(1)
Biden is under huge pressure from Congress to deal with the DeJoy problem. Mail carriers are being forced to work six 12-hour days at a time due to DeJoy’s cutbacks, and citizens are suffering from four price increases in two years.(2) And with the holiday shipping season in full swing, it’s the perfect time to make sure that DeJoy is fired once and for all.
Will you sign on with us today?
DeJoy’s decisions have been disastrous for the post office -- and right now they’re worse than ever.
During the busiest season of the year, DeJoy allowed only 64% of the number of typical seasonal hires.(3) Cities from St. Louis to Chicago to Portland (both of them!) are reporting significant delays and missing mail.(4) Recently, an exposé in The Washington Post showed how some post offices have been ordered to fulfill Amazon contracts before dealing with any other mail — which includes social security checks and prescription medications.(5)
Last time seats opened up, Biden compromised with Sen. Mitch McConnell to fill the seats.(6) We can’t afford him to make the same mistake twice. If he doesn’t put strong public advocates on the Board now, he won’t have another chance until 2024 -- and there’s a presidential election between now and then.
The Save the Post Office Coalition is calling on Biden to nominate former Representative Brenda Lawrence and policy expert Sarah Anderson to replace the Trump members. Rep. Lawrence was a USPS employee for 30 years before she was elected to Congress from Michigan. Anderson has written extensively on the USPS and economic issues and has a family of letter carriers. They will be the perfect antidote to the “10 year plan” DeJoy has to dismantle our nation’s oldest agency.
We need President Biden to hear us and save the post office from Louis DeJoy once and for all. Will you sign on?
Thank you for joining the fight.
