Message from Congressman Scott Fitzgerald

Good afternoon!

I hope everyone’s week is off to a good start. I had a fantastic time seeing many of you this weekend to kick off the season at Waukesha’s 60th Annual Christmas Parade!

I look forward to this parade every single year, and this year was no different. It was especially great to be with the community following the Parade Memorial ceremony that was held a couple of weeks ago to honor the victims who are no longer with us following the horrific parade attack two years ago.

As always, I am praying for healing and peace for the families and community.

I’m in Washington, DC this week. A big priority on the docket this week is a markup in the Judiciary Committee of H.R. 6570, the Protect Liberty and End Warrantless Surveillance Act, which reauthorizes certain provisions of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).

Have a great week!

- Scott

Roll Call Update

In last week's newsletter, I talked about two important bills that were being considered in the House:

  • No Funds For Iranian Terrorism Act— to impose immediate, mandatory sanctions on any financial institution that engages in a transaction with the Qatari banks holding the $6 billion of Iranian funds – effectively freezing this money.
  • Protecting our Communities from Failure to Secure the Border Act of 2023— to prohibit federal funding from being used to provide housing for illegal immigrants on any land under the jurisdiction of the Federal Land Management agencies.

I’m happy to report that I voted in support of these measures, and both passed the House! Next step is for the Senate to take action on the legislation.

CFPB Director Chopra Testified at Financial Services Committee

Last week, the director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Rohit Chopra testified before the Financial Services Committee. I wrote earlier this year about the CFPB, and how the agency, which was founded on the very premise of creating transparency, strays far from the principles it preaches.

Overturning Burdensome CFPB Rule

Last week, I voted to pass S.J.Res. 32. This resolution expresses Congress’s disapproval of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s (CFPB) burdensome and overly complex final rule implementing Section 1071 of the Dodd-Frank Act.

I was happy to see this measure pass, as it will safeguard small businesses’ ability to access affordable credit that supports and grows our economy. The rule that the CFPB proposed goes well beyond the agency’s authority. By overturning it, Congress would force the CFPB to better tailor the rule, to increase rather than decrease, small business lending, and protect against the release of their data.
