Dear John,
What happens when a popular idea, like taxing the wealth of billionaires, comes up against a Supreme Court tainted by years of receiving multiple million-dollar gifts from those very same billionaires?
One thing that must happen is a collective demand from the American people that those tainted justices recuse themselves from the case!
The Supreme Court case Moore v. United States tests this very issue. Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito have accepted luxury vacations from billionaires who stand to gain financially, and are tied to conservative political groups that are bringing the case before the Court. Yet neither has recused himself from the case.
So what can we do about this obvious conflict of interest? Watch this video to hear my recommendations, and share it with your friends. Then, get active! Let’s make our voices heard!
At stake in Moore v. United States is our ability to combat wealth inequality by taxing the vast fortunes accumulated by America’s billionaires.
As I explain in the video, the super-rich have a tricky way of increasing their wealth by using gains in their investment portfolios as collateral for loans. In turn, they can live off those loans or acquire even more assets while avoiding any income tax whatsoever -- it’s a way for them to have their cake and eat it too.
Friends, this is no time to sit on the sidelines! A majority of Americans support a wealth tax. But it will never happen if these justices are permitted to ignore their grave conflicts of interest.
Watch our breakdown here and then share it with friends or let us know your thoughts in the comments.
Thank you for everything you’re doing to help create a culture of accountability for the Supreme Court.
