"Federal Prisoner Statistics Collected Under the First Step Act, 2023"?is the fifth report that BJS produced as required under the First Step Act of 2018 (FSA; P.L. 115-391). It includes data on federal prisoners for calendar year 2022 from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. It also details selected characteristics of persons in prison, including marital, veteran, citizenship, and English-speaking status; education levels; medical conditions; and participation in treatment programs.

BJS has released" Prisoners in 2022 ? Statistical Tables". This report provides statistics on persons under the jurisdiction of state and federal correctional authorities. It includes counts and demographic and offense characteristics of prisoners in 2022, as well as findings on admissions, releases, and imprisonment rates. It also provides data on prisoners held under military jurisdiction. The report is the 97th in a series that began in 1926. Findings are based on BJS?s National Prisoner Statistics program.

"Federal Deaths in Custody and During Arrest, 2021 ? Statistical Tables" presents statistics on deaths that occur during federal arrest, detention, and incarceration in the United States. It describes decedent, incident, and facility characteristics of deaths in federal custody and during arrest by federal law enforcement agencies during fiscal year 2021. This report is the fourth in a series produced under the Death in Custody Reporting Act of 2013.

New report presents statistics on capital punishment [ [link removed] ]

"Capital Punishment, 2021 ? Statistical Tables" presents statistics on prisoners under sentence of death in 2021, a summary of state and federal death penalty laws in 2021, and historical trends in executions. The report provides data on which jurisdictions carried out an execution in 2021 and which methods of execution were authorized in each jurisdiction. It includes the demographics and criminal histories of persons under sentence of death. The report also provides advance counts of 2022 executions.

BJS has released "Local Police Departments, Procedures, Policies, and Technology, 2020 ? Statistical Tables" and "Sheriffs? Offices, Procedures, Policies, and Technology, 2020 ? Statistical Tables", which provide statistics on authorized equipment and techniques, body-worn cameras, and K-9 units in local police departments and sheriffs? offices. The reports also present information on training, policies, and procedures and describe the prevalence of community policing plans.

"School Resource Officers, 2019?2020" details the demographics and certification of school resource officers by the type of law enforcement agency that employs them. It also describes their law enforcement, mentoring, and teaching activities; the equipment they typically carried; and the training they received.

New report presents data on background checks for firearm transfers and permits [ [link removed] ]

BJS released "Background Checks for Firearm Transfers, 2019?2020", the 18th report in a series produced by BJS. It presents data on the number and percentage of applications for background checks for firearm transfers and permits received by the FBI and state and local checking agencies in 2019 and 2020. The report also includes data on the number of applications that were denied and the reason for denial. It describes the types of permits or checks used by each state, the number of denials issued by these agencies, and the reasons for denial.

BJS encourages comments for 60 days through January 8, 2024, on the Capital Punishment Report of Inmates Under Sentence of Death. Submit your comments on BJS's request to the Office of Management and Budget through the "Federal Register".

Through the National Prisoner Statistics data series (NPS-8), BJS will collect data from an estimated 85 respondents on changes in the size and composition of persons under state or federal sentence of death and changes to the laws regulating the imposition and implementation of death sentences in the United States.

BJS encourages comments for 60 days through January 22, 2024, on the National Prisoner Statistics Program: Maternal Health Supplement, a proposed data collection. This one-time survey will collect information from state departments of correction and the Federal Bureau of Prisons on maternal health and pregnancy outcomes from January 1 to December 31, 2023. Submit your comments to the Office of Management and Budget through the "Federal Register".

BJS announces an innovative dashboard for accessing Federal Justice Statistics Program data. This dashboard, an enhancement of the Federal Criminal Case Processing Statistics (FCCPS) data tool, improves the core functionality of the existing FCCPS tool and?for the first time?enables users to generate data visualizations and apply numerous filters to examine the data. BJS has also updated and expanded documentation guides to support new and existing users. These changes allow practitioners, policymakers, academics, and members of the general public to answer a greater variety of criminal justice questions.
