It's far past time we kick Big Polluters out!

If you had to guess, how many fossil fuel lobbyists do you think are attending the UN climate talks happening in Dubai right now?

While the answer, logically and morally, should be ZERO, this year, a record-setting 2,456 fossil fuel lobbyists have been allowed to swarm the climate summit in Dubai.

That’s more than nearly any single country’s delegation to the talks. Fossil fuel lobbyists are only outnumbered by the delegation from Brazil (which is expected to host an upcoming climate summit), and the UAE, the current host of the talks.

This fossil fuel lobbying frenzy paints an abundantly clear picture of why the climate talks continue to focus on ineffectual and unproven market schemes and false solutions instead of rapid and unequivocal action to phase out fossil fuels, deliver climate finance, and advance real solutions.

The frenzy illustrates how the fossil fuel industry is delaying climate action as communities across the Global South face life and death from a crisis they did nothing to create.

It’s far past time we kick Big Polluters out of the climate talks. That’s why we’re joining with our KBPO partners for a global day of action today. Take action today and make it clear that Big Polluters have no place at the climate talks!

The flood of fossil fuel lobbyists attending the climate talk is being exposed by deep research from the Kick Big Polluters Out coalition and represents a significant increase over the last few years. 636 fossil fuel lobbyists were granted access to last year’s climate talks, and 503 were admitted to the climate talks in 2021.

These high numbers may be because this year for the first time, thanks to sustained pressure from civil society, people attending the current climate talks were required to disclose who they represent, revealing many lobbyists who would likely have attended previous talks incognito. But it’s also because we know the writing is on the wall, it’s time to end fossil fuels, and Big Polluters are threatened.

We’re seeing the full extent of this problem, and we need to address it. Along with our partners, we’re calling on the UN climate treaty and world governments to put in place formal policies to bar Big Polluters, and those representing their interests from the talks, like the World Health Organization did with its tobacco treaty talks.

Will you take action and demand that the UN kick Big Polluters out of the climate talks? We’re asking you to take action via Twitter because, at this moment, it’s the most public and most effective way to get the attention of decision-makers at the climate talks.
