Dear John,

The KKK bombers pulled up to my uncle’s home, planning to blow it up.

It was a Friday night in the late 1960s. The weeknight I usually slept over at his house to spend time with my cousin...

Fortunately, a tip from an underground informant — who infiltrated the KKK at the request of ADL’s Southern Division office — alerted us to the danger.

Our synagogue had just been bombed. My uncle was the first to go on television and offer a reward for anyone with information about the bombing. The KKK didn’t like that.

But instead of finding our family asleep inside, the bombers were met by law enforcement. A high-speed car chase ended with the bombers crashing their car. The survivor went to jail.

John, that’s why I’m asking you to join me in supporting ADL before the end of the year.

My name is Sherrie Goodman and saving my life is just one of many reasons that five generations of Goodmans have supported ADL, from my great uncle to my grandchildren.

Today, antisemites, bigots and extremists no longer hide behind hoods and long robes. They’re out in the open in our communities and we must be even more vigilant.

Making your first gift before the end of the year will help ADL protect Jews and members of other marginalized groups in the coming year.

ADL is a vital part of our community. They work closely with law enforcement and local authorities to track, monitor, report and help stop antisemitic and extremist activity before it occurs. Like they did for me all those years ago.

And when you give to ADL, you’ll support vital community programs like No Place for Hate.

My granddaughter created a No Place for Hate committee in her school.

Thanks to her activism, she and her classmates are learning how to challenge biases and bullying to build a more inclusive school environment. This helps reduce antisemitism and other forms of hate at a young age.

If we’re going to stop hate for good, we need to start by teaching inclusion and respect for diversity to our children.

Please make your first gift during ADL’s end-of-year campaign. Your support will change hearts, minds and lives in 2024.

You may even save a life.

Thank you,
Sherrie Goodman
