The Sentencing Project
Dear John,
As we begin planning for the coming year, I'd like to acknowledge three realities facing The Sentencing Project.
Reality #1 : Last year, the U.S. prison population grew for the first time in almost a decade.
This means: As a society, we are not doing enough to address the root causes of crime in our communities. That's why The Sentencing Project’s rigorous research and public education to recommend proven and effective responses to crime that support community safety is more important than ever before. This reality also strengthens my resolve to not let a recent, temporary uptick in crime reverse all the progress we’ve made towards an effective and just criminal legal system.
Will you help sustain our progress with a gift today?

Reality #2 : Our organizational fiscal year ends on December 31.
This means: We have 26 days to reach our fundraising goals for the year, and your individual generosity is especially critical during this time. Every dollar helps us move closer to an end to mass incarceration. The sooner we can reach our financial goals, the more confidently we can create meaningful, lasting change in criminal legal systems across the country next year.
Will you invest in our future success with a gift today?

Reality #3 : Today’s economy affects everyone, but not equally.
This means: Now might not be the right time for you to make a financial contribution. Any way you can contribute – whether it’s giving monetarily or forwarding this email to someone else who cares – is a show of support. I appreciate how you give of yourself, your time, and your efforts for our mission.
I’m grateful to be in community with you as we face these realities together.
