You Can't Have a Career If You Quit Every Year - Inc.com

At least twice a year--in June graduation talks and in January year-ahead prediction speeches--I'm asked to give specific career advice to young people. Especially those aspiring to be entrepreneurs who want to "work for themselves"; and also to discuss which industries, markets, products, and services I believe will offer the most robust prospects for growth and new opportunities. In all honesty, each year this task gets more and more difficult; specifically, keeping a straight face and pretending that I have any special expertise or a high degree of confidence in the accuracy and value of my very sincere pronouncements. Still, I weather on.

Even apart from the fact that the world has never been changing so quickly and so extensively, the sheer glut of data, information, new discoveries, technical developments, and all manner of regulation (or the remarkable absence of regulation in so many new disciplines) makes it almost impossible to stay current across the broad spectrum of tech-centric businesses and to offer arguably informed views and opinions. In some respects, the complexity and the challenges arise from the abundance, rather than the absence, of so many choices.

I can say for sure that the idea that any serious startup founder works for himself or herself is a cruel and misleading fantasy regardless of the title they may give themselves, including "Chief Twit." The reality is that, while entrepreneurs of any age may not have one "boss", they have many masters - their investors, their board, their customers and clients, and their employees as well as too many rules, regulations, and restrictions to count.

An ‘Outsider’ In European VC, Midas Newcomer Hussein Kanji Wants To Bring Silicon Valley To Europe - Forbes

Beyond the investment he would ultimately make in her cybersecurity startup Darktrace, what Poppy Gustafsson most remembers about pitching Hoxton Ventures partner Hussein Kanji was the phone he was carrying back in 2015. "It was some weird thing that he stitched together," Gustafsson said of the device, which was frankensteined together from iPhone and Blackberry parts. Kanji had been a diehard Blackberry user. Adding that handheld's keyboard to his first iPhone seemed to him a no brainer improvement.

After leading a $2 million seed round into Darktrace, Kanji remained on the company's board for several years, carrying that bespoke handheld with him to meetings, an emblem of his do-things-my-own-way mindset. Darktrace went on to go public on the London Stock Exchange with its 2021 listing heralded as the event that "salvaged London's tech IPO dream." Darktrace today has a market cap of $2.9 billion.

Before he invested in Darktrace, Kanji made a bigger, riskier bet. In 2005 he walked out of a comfortable job at MicrosoftMSFT in Redmond, Washington state, and moved to London to become a venture capitalist and bring Silicon Valley-style seed investing to Europe. It was a controversial decision at the time. "People literally told me, 'You used to be smart and then you moved to London and now we're not sure about you anymore,'" Kanji said.

As colleges are being forced to rethink their policies in the wake of theSupreme Court'sruling against affirmative action, more schools are also choosing to endlegacy preferences, adding uncertainty to the process.

"There's a true perception that the process is getting more and more unpredictable," said Eric Greenberg, president of Greenberg Educational Group, a New York-based consulting firm.
