Your weekly Indivisible Newsletter Indivisibles,
It’s been an eventful two weeks since we last sent out our Newsletter. Donald Trump vowed to never give up on the fight to roll back the ACA (here’s an in-depth look at our winning history with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from our own Sarah Dohl) and last Friday, George Santos was expelled from the House after his web of lies finally came home to roost (read more about that and our plans for the other 17 Unrepresentatives here).
It’s important to remember that both of these men have been supported by the Republican Party through lies, deception, and insurrection. The only reason Republicans finally agreed to expel Santos was because, following a year of compounding instances of impropriety, the House Ethics Committee released their report concluding that Santos, “sought to fraudulently exploit every aspect of his House candidacy for his own personal financial profit.”
Even still, 116 Republicans voted against expelling Santos.
Whether it’s outright fraud, insurrection, or the repeal of health insurance for over 40 million Americans, Republicans will always choose the party over the people. That is why it is so important that we get ahead of the curve organizing for 2024.
Republicans, and their supporters, will back every type of treachery as long as it means they maintain their hold on power. We do things differently (better) -- we’re honest about the things we can and will deliver for the American people if we win a true trifecta.
But, the good news is that the people are behind us -- they just need to know it!
When the people get the honest truth about what Democrats can and have delivered on, they support the candidates. It’s on us to make sure they hear that message.
If you’re ready to be a part of those efforts, sign up to be all in to defeat Trump, and be one of the first to hit the ground to talk to voters when we roll out critical tools over the next several weeks and into the new year!
With that, here are your weekly to-dos:
Your 5 weekly to-dos
- Register for our final National Campaigns Call of 2023 this Thursday, December 7 at 8pm ET/5pm PT. Join activists across the country as we celebrate the incredible accomplishments of Indivisibles over the past year and take a look ahead to the exciting campaigns and strategic plans for 2024.
- Write a letter to the editor (LTE) warning your community that No Labels is a threat to our democracy. No Labels is planning to run a spoiler candidate in the 2024 presidential election in order to deny any candidate the 270 electoral votes needed for election. That would send the decision about our next president to the MAGA-controlled House of Representatives and clear the way for a second Trump presidency. Make sure your community knows just how dangerous No Labels’ plan would be for our democracy.
- If you have a Republican Member of Congress (MoC), write an LTE demanding that they denounce Trump’s threats to the Affordable Care Act. In 2017, our collective efforts, town halls, and constituent pressure made the difference in ensuring the ACA was here to stay. With Trump, once again, putting our health care in his sights, make sure your representatives know that they must publicly oppose taking away healthcare from millions of Americans.
- If you have a Democratic MoC, write an LTE about Trump’s threat to repeal the ACA. We need to make sure every American knows that he’s planning to strip away healthcare from millions of people. This is a direct attack on the health and safety of the people alongside what would have a devastating impact on our economy. Make sure your community knows what’s at stake next November.
- Write an LTE on Trump’s dangerous positions on abortion. Trump is once again trying to lie to the American people and position himself as moderate on abortion. Let’s be clear -- Trump is no moderate. It was his SCOTUS nominations that sealed the deal on overturning Roe, he can’t go back now and scrub his legacy for votes now that he knows abortion is one of the most mobilizing issues of our time. We know where he stands, make sure your neighbors do too.
P.S. If you've completed your weekly to-do's and are looking for more ways to support this movement, consider making a donation today. Your contribution will help keep our call pages up and running, fund the tools we use to mobilize volunteers, and continue all the work we're doing this year.
2024 Indivisible Endorsements Guide
Check out the 2024 Indivisible Endorsements Guide.
The 2024 elections are just around the corner!
In addition to doing the essential work of rooting out MAGA extremists at every level of government, we have the opportunity to elect the strongest Democrats to champion progressive priorities and defend progressive values. Since 2018, our movement has been doing just that: building power by helping to elect the next generation of bold leaders at every level of government. Indivisible groups across the country have pushed candidates on issues that matter, contacted thousands of voters, and shown that the power of our movement is impossible to ignore.
If your group is considering getting involved in 2024 elections, one of the most powerful ways you can have an impact is by making endorsements. We know elections can be intimidating! We also know that an endorsement, done correctly, is one of the most powerful tools to create change. This guide demystifies the process with advice on how best to engage in both primary and general elections.
Your Opinion Needed: Mehdi Hasan and MSNBC
For the last three years, MSNBC journalist Mehdi Hasan has passionately hosted The Mehdi Hasan Show and used his platform to fearlessly speak truth to power. He’s covered the most pressing issues our network cares about, and he takes seriously the existential threat against our democracy from Donald Trump and MAGA Republicans.
Last week, MSNBC suddenly announced that he would no longer be hosting his own show -- and everyone from Members of Congress to prominent media leaders to actor Mark Hamill spoke out in praise of his talents. As Ezra wrote on Threads, “Mehdi's a real journalist - and a healthy democracy needs more journalists like him with big platforms.”
We know that Indivisibles care about how media outlets report the news and who gets to have a platform, and we want to understand how you feel about this decision. Weigh in now through our survey -- do you follow Mehdi Hasan’s journalism, whether on MSNBC, Peacock or social media?
Call for a Humanitarian Ceasefire
**Content Warning: Talk about the current Israel/Palestinian conflict. Jump to the line break if you need to avoid this topic.** |
The temporary humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza ended on Friday, closing what was relatively the safest chapter in a brutal crisis that began when Hamas murdered over 1400 Israeli, American, and foreign citizens and took more than 200 hostages on October 7. The ceasefire marked the largest exchange of hostages since the crisis began, and we continue to call for the immediate release of all hostages while condemning Hamas’ brutal October 7 attacks.
With the end of the ceasefire, Israel now continues its campaign which Netanyahu claims is to eliminate Hamas, but which has claimed over 15,000 Palestinian lives including at least 6,600 children.
We must, as a civilized nation, be clear about one thing: The price of the elimination of Hamas cannot continue to be thousands of murdered children. Those children have no choice in where they live or whether they can escape and are fully and unquestionably victims of this crisis.
As the bombardment resumes, over 60 Members of Congress have called for a ceasefire or cessation of hostilities. They believe that the way to sustained peace cannot be paved by indiscriminate bombing and that driving Palestinians from one “safe” zone to another while restricting aid and destroying infrastructure is unsustainable.
We need more Members of Congress to join them. Make a call and send an email today:
