As Jane noted, “Attorney General Rob Bonta has dedicated his career to the
pursuit of justice, and recently filed one of the most important climate
cases of our time.”

Rob and Jane went on to talk about this groundbreaking case, which Rob and
the California Department of Justice filed this September. Through Rob’s
leadership, California is the biggest geographic entity and economy to sue
Big Oil for their deception on this global issue.

Rob is taking on five of the largest fossil fuel companies in the world —
ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, ConocoPhillips, and BP — as well as their
lobbying group the American Petroleum Institute. They knew about climate
change decades ago and lied about it to the public to protect their bottom
line.

Investigation shows the oil and gas industry had research backing up
climate change as early as the 1950s. Though 80% of Exxon’s internal
documents acknowledged that climate change is real, 81% of their external
advertising and editorials denied it or cast doubt publicly.

Why? Because the longer they could delay action on climate change and a
reduction in fossil fuel consumption, the more they stood to profit.

Now, as a major part of California’s legacy and a watershed moment in the
climate movement, Rob is holding these powerful companies responsible for
their deception and harm to our environment and public health.
