Dear Friends,

As Israelis continue to deal with the fallout of Hamas’ horrific terror
onslaught – and as millions of Palestinians grapple with devastating
violence and displacement following the Israeli government’s response –
Israeli society is experiencing deep and profound challenges within its
own borders.

Hamas’ attack left thousands of Israelis around the Gaza envelope
displaced from their homes and communities. Kibbutzim and Bedouin
communities in the south have been particularly devastated. Families,
already grieving the loss of loved ones, have fled across the country,
unable to return.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu’s anti-democratic coalition has stepped up efforts to
stifle free speech, including restrictions on Israelis advocating for
peace, coexistence and Palestinian rights. Palestinian citizens of Israel
are facing threats, academic expulsion, professional repercussions or even
police crackdowns for acknowledging the pain of fellow Palestinians or for
speaking out against violence in Gaza and the West Bank.

This Wednesday, December 6 at 1pm Eastern, join J Street for a
conversation with journalist Anshel Pfeffer and pro-democracy organizer
Liat Weiss Shahaf about the situation within Israel during this ongoing
crisis.

Together with J Street Chief of Staff Adina Vogel Ayalon, our guests will
discuss how Israelis are responding to the government’s treatment of
survivors, displaced communities and critics of the war.

Anshel Pfeffer has covered Israeli politics, global affairs and the legacy
of Netanyahu for over two decades. He is a senior correspondent and
columnist for Haaretz and Israel correspondent for The Economist.

Liat Weiss Shahaf serves as a leader in Brothers and Sisters in Arms, a
collective of IDF reservists opposed to Netanyahu’s judicial coup which
has its grassroots network to connect survivors and displaced Israelis to
resources and support.

Times of war test our values and democratic freedoms. However, we cannot
allow them to become casualties of conflict.

We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for this timely and vital
discussion.

Thank you,
J Street Events
