Dear John,
Events last week remind us that even during this joyous holiday season, suffering animals need our help.

A shelter housing 200 animals in Dominica, an island nation in the Caribbean, was forced to close, and their pets were going to be euthanized, or put back on the street where they previously faced unimaginable cruelty.

These pets have been through a lot. Worse than we’ve ever seen. Burned, beaten, tied up and left for dead…in the midst of all this horror, this shelter, St. Nicholas Animal Rescue, was there to rehabilitate them. Until they lost their lease and were forced out.

Over the weekend, PAWS collaborated with St. Nicholas Animal Rescue, partner rescue organizations in Florida, and Wings of Rescue to transport the 200 cats and dogs from Dominica to care and safety in the US.

On Saturday, December 2, PAWS welcomed 43 puppies and dogs and 36 cats and kittens at the DuPage airport. Our staff and volunteers were standing by to transport the displaced animals to the PAWS Chicago Medical Center where they will receive the help they need.

As you’re aware, PAWS Chicago’s number one priority is rescuing homeless pets from Chicago Animal Care and Control, but when we learned of the atrocities animals faced in Dominica, we had to step up to help.

We welcomed Sage and her sister Sabrina. Severely underweight and searching for food, they were seen being kicked and beaten. Sage suffered four broken ribs and a fractured leg.
Grover is safe now too. A senior dog, he was left in the city center where he was tortured and burned simply because of his age. He survived and has been living in the shelter's small yard with 20 other dogs.

Dozens of cats and kittens were tortured as well. Some were rescued from the meat trade, others were thrown in the river to drown.

“More than 85% of the animals we rescue are a result of human-inflicted injuries! Dog-fighting rings. . . and people here poison dogs for fun without consequence," said Dr. Golnaz Naderkhani, the physician who opened Dominica’s first and only animal rescue.

"It is a very, very desperate and sad situation," she said.

Offering help and hope during emergencies is a big part of our No Kill mission. We can say yes when called upon because our PAWS Chicago community always rises to the occasion. Please help now if you can. Help us ensure all PAWS pets experience the love and safety they deserve.
