Dear John,
Elections for Precinct Captain are right around the corner. This low-commitment and often overlooked position can carry a lot of power, especially if workers coordinate. Many Precinct Captain positions are vacant in Summit County, but even if your precinct currently has a captain, the barrier to run for the position is low: You need just 5-15 signatures from voters in your precinct (ideally voters who have voted as Democrats in recent elections). The deadline to file is 12/20, so act fast!
Why should you run?
As a Precinct Captain, you are only required to meet once per year, and your position holds the power to elect new lawmakers to vacant positions within the county (e.g., in the event of a death or resignation). Precinct Captains can also vote to prevent an individual from running as a Democrat, keeping them in check and making their odds at a successful election or reelection much slimmer if they’ve been behaving badly.
