The number of people enrolling in university continues to rise — effectively devaluating the undergraduate degree — and a growing number of employers are beginning to require master’s degrees for competitive roles. What, then, are the motives you should be considering if you are deciding whether or not to enroll in a graduate program? Firstly, people who have graduate school degrees are generally paid more money than those who don’t. But while some programs have a clear ROI, there’s a great deal of variability. Consider if the field you’re interested in really requires a master’s to boost your earning potential. The second reason you might consider grad school is to make a career transition. If you find yourself wanting to shift paths (either to keep up with the changing job landscape, or to follow your passion) grad school may not be a bad idea. But if you are simply looking to learn a couple of new skills, you might consider using cheaper online resources like Udemy and Coursera — or even YouTube to learn for free.

Although the rich world is enjoying a long spell of unprecedented job growth and low unemployment, competition for the most competitive roles remains fierce. Tech companies like Google and Microsoft reportedly receive two million applications per year, and banks like Goldman Sachs attract in the thousands.

How to Get the Most Out of a Day Off - Harvard Business Review

A lot of people feel exhausted when it comes to vacations—planning around personal commitments and school breaks, and deciding how to delegate major projects or put work on hold. But vacations don’t have to be a big time commitment to be significant to your health and happiness. Micro-vacations are times off that require you to use a day or less of vacation time. Because of their shorter duration, they typically require less effort to plan and don’t require you to coordinate the handing off of work. Plus, you can take them more often. If you’re looking to take micro-vacations, consider these options: Take a two- to three-day trip to someplace local. Or, take a day or afternoon off to finish those personal to-do items you’ve been postponing. Leave work for an hour or two to socialize with friends, or if taking the time is still an issue, work remotely in a serene location to give yourself the feel of a holiday while you’re still on task.

The idea of “vacation” often conjures up thoughts of trips to faraway lands. While it’s true that big trips can be fun and even refreshing, they can also take a lot of time, energy, and money. A lot of people feel exhausted just thinking about planning a vacation—not just navigating personal commitments and school breaks, but deciding how to delegate major projects or put work on hold, just so they can have a stress-free holiday. Because of this, some might put off their time away, figuring they’ll get to it when their schedule isn’t so demanding, only to discover at the end of the year that they haven’t used up their paid time off.

Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, often dons fatigues while visiting troops in Kashmir. On November 25th he went one better by squeezing into a flight suit and taking a sortie over Bangalore in a Tejas fighter jet. The Indian-designed plane embodies Mr Modi’s push for India to make more of its own weapons. It also embodies much of what has gone wrong with the country’s defence. The jet is 20 years behind schedule, underpowered, and disdained by Indian pilots.

India’s growing geopolitical clout is based in large part on a hope that it can balance Chinese power. That makes the modernisation of the partly antiquated Indian armed forces—the second biggest of any country, with 1.4m full-time personnel—a matter of global interest. Follies like the Tejas make it easy to be pessimistic. The forces are also heavily reliant on Soviet-legacy hardware. Successful modernisation, assuming it happens, is likely to take decades. Yet a close look at India’s defence efforts reveals several areas of significant and underappreciated progress.

This starts with a striking shift in focus. Indian leaders have talked about China as the main enemy for 25 years. But deployments told a different story. Only 12 of the Indian army’s 38 divisions historically faced China. Terrorist attacks emanating from Pakistan and domestic insurgencies absorbed most of the army’s attention. The trigger for change came in June 2020 when, after years of rising tensions, Indian and Chinese troops clashed violently, with clubs and machetes, in the Galwan valley in the mountains of eastern Ladakh.
