Call 1-855-678-4150 and tell Congress: Domestic workers need paid sick leave NOW!
John,
The coronavirus crisis is intensifying. Every hour, more cases are confirmed. And experts are warning Americans: stay home if you're sick.
But for millions of domestic workers, taking a sick day could mean losing a paycheck -- or even losing your job.
It's immoral, it's a threat to public health, and it needs to change now.
Call your representative today, and tell them that domestic workers need paid sick days immediately!
Here's what to do:
-
Dial 1-855-678-4150 and follow the prompts to be connected to your representative's congressional office.
NOTE: If you're connected to the Capitol switchboard, be sure to tell the operator your zip code to connect to your representative.
- Once you're connected, tell the staff person who answers that you’re a constituent and supporter of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, and you're counting on them to strongly support paid sick days for all workers, including domestic workers, in any policy response to coronavirus -- because all workers deserve paid time off when they're sick.
NOTE: If your call is sent to voicemail or unanswered be sure to call again in the morning to ensure your voice is heard.
- That's all you have to say -- but personal stories can make a big impact! So if you're comfortable, you can also tell them why it's important to you that caregivers and other domestic workers get protection from the coronavirus threat.
Domestic workers are on the front lines of the fight against coronavirus. They are closest to the people most vulnerable to illness like seniors and people with chronic illnesses, and they work with children and people with disabilities everyday. And they do that without affordable healthcare, paid time off or job security.
Making sure that they can take a paid sick day when they need one is the very least that we can do.
We ask so much of domestic workers in times of crisis: to care for our homes, and for our families. Now it's time for us to care for them, too.
Sincerely,
Ai-jen Poo, Executive Director
National Domestic Workers Alliance
