In an uncertain time, Nintendo tried to predict the future.

Nintendo famously revived the entire video game industry in the United States with its Nintendo Entertainment System, but not in the way they had originally planned.
Their original idea was not the NES, but the AVS: the Advanced Video System, which featured wireless controllers and computer accessories. It was never released.
