We need to reframe aging & care

Hi John,

Aging is beautiful. But everywhere I look, society vilifies getting older and doesn’t leave space for older people to truly be seen and supported.

This means our aging relatives can quickly become isolated and alone at a time in their lives when they need support the most, despite the fact that so many of them have taken care of us throughout our lives.

Take a look at what five artists created in collaboration with three of our Caring Across Care Fellows – “When We Grow Older,” an art & storytelling exhibition that helps us reimagine what it means to age with dignity and in community.

Art has the power to change the way we see the world, awakening us to new perspectives, ideas, and values – and we’re so thankful that we could partner with the Center for Cultural Power, Metta Fund, and the SCAN Foundation on this incredible art display unveiled at last month’s CareFest

Inspired by the experiences of Spanish-speaking and Afro-Latina caregivers aging in California, the captivating works by artists Monica Ahanonu, Cece Carpio, Xia Gordon, James Quarles, and Yosimar Reyes challenge the harmful narratives around aging that directly impact the types of support older adults receive.

Not everyone in our current care system receives the support they need to thrive. Black women, immigrant women, and other women of color are disproportionately harmed by our lacking care systems, both as caregivers and as part of an aging population that needs care themselves.

Art like this is so important. It shines a light on how aging adults should feel dignified and comfortable. It also helps us see what it would look and feel like to live in an anti-racist, anti-ableist society that celebrates aging, not fears it.

Let’s reimagine the beauty of aging together,
