This week, we observed the 30-year anniversary of the Brady Bill becoming law. Named for injured White House Press Secretary James Brady, this law implemented federal background checks on firearms, which remain a critical part of our gun safety processes. On the same day, we commemorated the two-year anniversary of the mass shooting at Oxford High School in Michigan. And this last week marked 11 years since I lost my own son Jordan in a senseless shooting. These somber anniversaries remind us all of our continued responsibility to pursue common-sense gun violence prevention policies.
To that end, I co-led a letter on Friday with my colleagues Congresswoman Robin Kelly and Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin in support of a proposed rule to expand background check requirements for gun sellers not previously classified as a Federal firearm licensee. To learn more about this proposed rule, see this press release from my office.
