BIG news today in the Michigan Senate race: As of this morning, Sandy Pensler announced his candidacy to be the Republican nominee in the U.S. Senate race here in Michigan. That makes 10 republicans officially vying for the nomination, of which four are serious competitors.
Michiganders might remember Sandy: he ran for the Republican nomination for Senate in 2018, spent $5 million of his own money on his campaign, and narrowly lost the nomination to John James (who won with 46% of the vote.)
Pensler made his fortune in private equity with Pensler Capital Corp., and has the ability to again spend millions of his own dollars, particularly on early TV ads. In contrast, our campaign is relying on grassroots support from emails like this. It’s quite a difference. Can you make a contribution to ensure we have the resources we need to win?

Pensler now joins former Congressman Peter Meijer, former Congressman Mike Rogers, and former Detroit Chief of Police James Craig in the race.
Pensler’s announcement video – which features a healthy dose of scare-tactic messaging to appeal to the extreme elements of GOP – furthers a trend we’ve observed in this primary: It is all about appealing to Trump, and his most fervent supporters.
Since September, we’ve already witnessed Mike Rogers repeatedly selling out his national security credentials to appeal to the anti-law enforcement wing of the Republican party, going so far as to condemn his former colleagues at the FBI. After voting to impeach Trump, Peter Meijer has now completely flip-flopped, claiming he would support Trump's nomination while minimizing the January 6th insurrection. And we’ve seen James Craig go on Steve Bannon’s podcast in the clear hope of currying Trump’s endorsement.
Beyond just appealing to Trump, Pensler is on record on a whole host of other policies that don’t seem to jive with Michiganders: he supported the 2017 Trump tax giveaway, cutting taxes for the ultra wealthy like himself, and has staked out an extreme position on abortion: he says he is “100% pro-life,” called Roe v. Wade a “terrible decision,” and just this week claimed that Prop 3 in Michigan, which protected the right to choose, “went too far.”
While at first it may appear we have the full range of voices in the Republican primary for Senate, every candidate has proven themselves to be someone who will say and do anything to get elected. Even at the expense of their own dignity.
Our campaign is trying to demonstrate a different way. That’s why we’re asking for your support to continue building the kind of campaign we’ll need to WIN. Will you make a donation now? Every contribution in these first 24 hours following this announcement will help us send a clear message about the strength of our campaign.
