Dear neighbor,
I hope you had a nice Thanksgiving holiday. I returned to Washington this week prepared to get to work on behalf of the American people. With only two legislative weeks left this year, Democrats remain ready to pass critical government funding legislation to ensure that our economy and national security are not harmed.
Instead, the extreme Republican majority is more focused on playing political games with a completely baseless impeachment of President Biden. Their evidence-free accusations do absolutely nothing to help American families.
PHOTO OF THE WEEK: As artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues developing, we must ensure we’re protecting Americans’ civil rights from its potential harms. This week I hosted a roundtable conversation with other Members of Congress featuring a discussion with experts about the intersection of AI and civil rights. With the right oversight, AI can be used as a tool to build a more just and equitable society.
APP-SOLUTELY AWESOME APP CHALLENGE WINNERS: I was honored to host our annual Congressional App Challenge reception and announce the winners this week! Each year, high school students in our community submit apps they’ve built and designed. As a recovering computer science major, I am inspired by the projects submitted this year. The first place app this year, submitted by Sarah Varghese from Ridgecrest Intermediate School, uses several user-friendly features to help the visually impaired. Our district is home to some of the leading STEM companies and institutions in the country. I can’t wait to see what these young innovators will do. Congratulations to all of our winners and thank you to the students who shared their fantastic ideas!
NEW STATE FUNDING FOR HOMELESSNESS PROJECTS: One of my top priorities in Congress is working to address the homelessness crisis in Los Angeles County and throughout the country. I was pleased to see Governor Newsom’s announcement of $300 million in grants for cities and counties across the state to support homelessness projects and encampment cleanup efforts. Mayor Bass has also made exceptional progress on this important issue in Los Angeles County through the Inside Safe program. While we’ve come a long way on this issue, we have more work to do to ensure all our neighbors have a safe place to call home. I remain dedicated to working toward this goal in Congress.

Sincerely,
Ted W. Lieu
Member of Congress
