Dear John,

Conservative think tanks and publications have been very busy this fall pumping out propaganda designed to undermine Social Security. Of course, the conservative movement has been working to weaken or eliminate the program since the 1980s, and its messaging seeps quite seamlessly into the mainstream media narrative about Social Security.

A recent opinion piece in Slate magazine is the latest example of anti-Social Security propaganda from the political right. The unsubtly titled piece, Social Security Doesn’t Make Sense Anymore, is rife with errors, misinformation and false justification for making “radical” changes to this program.

This propaganda campaign is working in tandem with efforts by opponents of Social Security in Congress to reduce your earned benefits. And so we need to ensure all members of Congress hear from the real stakeholders in this debate — YOU — about how to preserve this critical program for decades to come.

John, that’s why I’m asking you to sign our urgent Petition to Congress today, informing lawmakers of how important your earned Social Security benefits are to your well-being and that of millions of other older Americans — and how vital it is for your elected officials to protect and strengthen, not cut, this vital program.

Bottom line, we don’t need to “radically rethink” Social Security! What we need is for lawmakers to act immediately to shore up Social Security for current and future beneficiaries by requiring the wealthy to pay their fair share into the program, improving the Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) formula so seniors receive a fairer COLA each year, and giving seniors an across-the-board benefit boost.

Please help the National Committee keep the pressure on Congress to protect and strengthen — not cut — Social Security for millions of older Americans by signing our Urgent Petition to Congress today!

Sincerely,

Max Richtman
