At 12:30pm CT on Monday, December 4th, I will be hosting a virtual town hall with local experts on the ongoing youth mental health epidemic, how best to address it, and what steps parents, health care professionals, and policymakers can take to help those in need. Following the onset of the pandemic, awareness to do more to address America’s mental health crisis, particularly in teens and young people, has risen, but there is still more to be done at all levels, particularly as we confront the related substance abuse challenges facing our nation. You can RSVP to my town hall here. I look forward to seeing you there.

On Thursday, I co-led the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) hearing on the CCP’s information manipulation tactics and how the U.S. can best counter and address them moving forward. During my opening statement, I discussed how the emergence of technology like “deepfakes” – hyper realistic video portrayals that can be made of public figures to spread misinformation and propaganda – has made it even more critical that the U.S. develops a strategy to counter the CCP’s information warfare. As the 2024 election approaches, it is essential that we prepare for any potential CCP-driven misinformation or disinformation campaigns. It is my hope that our hearing opens the door to more substantive discussion on the future of CCP information interference and how we can counter it in the future.
Recently, Chairman Gallagher and I had the opportunity to highlight the committee’s bipartisan work in a profile in Foreign Policy. In our first year, our committee has already worked to address a wide range of the economic and security threats posed by the CCP to our workers, our businesses, and our allies, while also shining a light on the Uyghur genocide the CCP continues to perpetrate. I am grateful for the contributions of my colleagues to our committee while prioritizing practical, bipartisan policy approaches.
