Headlines

🗣️ It was a pleasure to address the National Children and Adults Services Conference in Bournemouth this week, to talk about Labour’s vision for fundamental reform in adult social care, working hand in hand with local government to develop a National Care Service.

🤝 I had some positive and constructive conversations with a range of organisations working across the sector on the work they are doing, from major providers like HC-One to consultancies like Impower, helping local councils deliver better outcomes.

📝 I also joined a private meeting with the Association of Directors of Adult Social Services to hear about the immense challenges directors of adult social services are facing in their local authorities after endless rounds of cuts.

🌹 It was great to end the day with our fantastic Labour local government family, addressing an LGA Labour Group meeting, where councillors from across the country shared some innovative best practice from their areas showing, despite the significant difficulties councils are facing, what Labour can deliver in power.

It was great to be part of The New Statesman's Path to Power conference in London this week, where. I took part in the final discussion: building an NHS for the future.

I was able to talk about Labour’s plans to modernise our NHS and care services, shifting from hospital to community, analogue to digital and focusing on prevention.

This week I responded to a Statutory Instrument on the government's shameful attempts to impose Minimum Service Levels on Ambulance staff.

No matter the heckles from certain MPs who spend more time in the GB News studio than representing their constituents, the fact is this: these regulations have never worked before, they won't work now, and they won't work in the future.

At Energy Security Questions I reminded the Minister that business is frankly alarmed at the government’s rollbacks on net zero.

As the Aviva CEO said, putting our climate goals “under threat” risks “jobs, growth and investment the UK requires.”

CELEBRATING LANCASHIRE DAY

27 November marked Lancashire Day. The day was chosen because in 1295 on this day, King Edward I permitted the first ever parliamentary representation from the county.

Although the administrative areas have chopped and changed over the years, the historic County Palatine and Duchy of Lancaster still remains a geographical and political reality, with the boundary cutting through modern Greater Manchester at the Rivers Mersey and Tame.

I attended a brilliant flag raising ceremony at Ryecroft Hall in Audenshaw, where the Civic Mayor of Tameside Councillor Taf Sharif read out the Loyal Proclamation to children from Aldwyn Primary School.

A huge thank you to Team Audenshaw Councillors Charlotte Martin, Teresa Smith and Nick Axford and the brilliant volunteers at Ryecroft Hall Community Association for all their hard work on this event.

Following that, myself and Councillor Allison Gwynne raised the Lancashire flag at Denton Town Hall too.

DEBDALE BOWLING CLUB FUNDRAISING

A big thank you to Allan Grafton from The Friends of Debdale Park for inviting me to a cheque presentation with Macmillan Cancer Support.

The brilliant members of Debdale Bowling and Social Club raised an amazing £565.30 at their coffee morning.

As so many of us know from personal experience, myself included, the work of Macmillan in helping patients and their families through a cancer journey is so invaluable.

Well done to the Debdale Bowlers (and thank you for making me feel so welcome), and to Macmillan: thank you for all you do!

DENTON CHRISTMAS LIGHTS

I've written to the Chief Executive of Tameside Council about the state of Denton's Christmas lights.

Let's hope we get a practical solution, and soon.

Here in Tameside, we are blessed with some fantastic green spaces.

It’s something that our community is rightfully proud of.

Groups such as Friends of the Tame Valley, whom I’m proud to be the Secretary of, do incredible work protecting and preserving the landscapes that have such a positive impact on the local area.

But the work they do, and the benefit our natural environment brings to Tameside, is under a serious threat.

For too long, sewage being dumped in waterways is something that has just been accepted as a given, but people are now standing up to say, enough is enough.

Make no mistake, this shameful practice on this government’s watch and when it comes to protecting our rivers, reservoirs, and local environment from this shameful practice, they have been asleep at the wheel.

Nothing symbolises 13 years of Conservative failure more than tides of raw sewage swelling down our rivers and into our lakes.

They are up to their necks in a sewage crisis of their own making, and people across Tameside are paying the price.

Last year, we saw raw sewage dumped in Tameside’s waterways thousands of times through storm overflows.

Environment Agency data shows that storm overflows were used 2,444 across Tameside during 2022, pumping out raw sewage for over 8,000 hours.

The government say they are clamping down, setting stringent targets on the use of storm overflows, but empty rhetoric simply will not cut it.

Their failure to prevent these sewage leaks has led to a drastic increase in illegal discharges trashing nature and putting people’s health at risk.

We can’t afford to continue with this weak approach, we need action to tackle the shameful practice of sewage dumps.

It’s why I’m proud to back the plans laid out by my friend Steve Reed, Labour’s Shadow Environment Secretary.

Labour will get tough on illegal sewage dumps by giving the regulator Ofwat greater powers to clamp down on those polluting our waterways, forcing them to clean up their toxic mess.

We will make monitoring of every water outlet compulsory, so that firm action can be taken against the polluters.

When pollution is detected, we will come down hard to impose automatic, instant, and severe fines for every illegal sewage dump.

Under Labour, it won’t be people in Tameside paying the price for this shameful practice, it will be the polluters.
