Former President Donald Trump continues to resist the Republican National Committee's repeated attempts to persuade him to participate in the debate stage with his competitors.
On Thursday, the Republican frontrunner announced his intention to host an "end of the year" fundraiser in Hallandale Beach, Florida, promoting the opportunity for tickets to his millions of followers. The event is scheduled for December 6th, coinciding with the fourth debate in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where his fellow candidates will face off, sponsored by NewsNation, The Megyn Kelly Show on Sirius XM, the Washington Free Beacon, and Rumble.
Sources close to President Trump pointed to diminishing interest in the GOP debates, which have struggled in his absence, leading previous sponsors like Fox News to cut advertising rates due to sluggish viewership. Trump and his allies have urged RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel to cancel the remaining debates, asserting his significant lead in the polls as a reason not to participate.
In a potential shift, the RNC is reportedly considering a proposal next week to allow GOP presidential contenders to engage in unofficial debates and forums. Stringent rules governing the debate schedule have raised concerns about candidates being excluded from official debates if they deviate from the RNC's format.
Insiders revealed to The Washington Post that the RNC has not scheduled any future debates.
On Thursday, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, once a top rival to Trump for the nomination, engaged in a debate with California Governor Gavin Newsom on Fox News. DeSantis has previously advocated for "more freewheeling debates" that permit direct challenges among competitors and has challenged President Trump to one-on-one debates, an eventuality seemingly less likely given his declining poll numbers.
In previous debates, President Trump participated in an interview with Tucker Carlson that surpassed the first debate's ratings. He addressed union members protesting in Michigan, a move that "terrified" advisors to President Joe Biden, and held a Florida rally showcasing his ability to attract massive crowds of devoted supporters.
The race to qualify for the stage poses a risk of excluding some candidates who met the criteria for previous debates. To qualify, candidates must achieve at least 6 percent in two approved national polls or 6 percent in one poll from two separate early-voting states: Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada, and South Carolina. Participants also need to accumulate at least 80,000 unique donors, with at least 200 unique donors per state or territory, in 20 or more states.
According to Five Thirty Eight polling averages, Chris Christie, Vivek Ramaswamy, Doug Burgum, and Asa Hutchinson are all falling short of the six percent national threshold.
