Hi John,
I hope you had a meaningful and restorative Thanksgiving. I spent time with family and friends and reflected on how grateful I am to represent the most engaged and extraordinary community in the nation. From weathering extreme polarization, civic unrest, two presidential impeachments, the global public health and economic crisis brought on by the pandemic, and so much more, my service has been filled with many lessons, and pushed me to be the pragmatic problem solver I hoped to be for all of you.
I ran for Congress in large part because of the extreme partisanship and deep divisions we experienced in the aftermath of the 2016 election. Seven years have passed, each presenting historic opportunities to practice a brand of optimistic politics that repairs relationships and improves people’s lives. It has been the honor of my lifetime to be your voice in Washington over the last five years (and counting!), but it's time to pass the torch. That's why, after three terms, I announced last week that I will not be seeking re-election to Congress in 2024.
I always say that representation begins with listening, and your diverse and respectful voices represent the very best of America. If you have contacted my offices to share an idea, express concerns, or ask questions, thank you from the bottom of my heart. I've learned a great deal from all of you, and for that, I am eternally grateful. You have made this the most joyful job I've ever had, and I know my successor will serve you with invitation, integrity, and fortitude – because you will demand it. I look forward to continuing to serve you until January 3rd, 2025. In the meantime, please continue to keep in touch, share ideas, and reach out to my office by visiting phillips.house.gov if you need assistance. We are always here to help.
Thanks as always for reading, and remember, the future is very bright, as long as we have the courage and make the choice to seek it.
Keep the faith and keep in touch,
Dean Phillips
Member of Congress
