Friends, I’m a combat veteran. I’m a gun owner. And my wife Gabby is a survivor of gun violence. I know firsthand the damage a firearm can do in the wrong hands.

But as a Senator, I also know that it’s within our power to protect our children and our communities. It’s within our power to solve tough problems.

That’s why today, I’ve introduced new legislation to reduce gun violence with several of my colleagues. The GOSAFE Act will help protect communities from the most dangerous semi-automatic rifles and the high-capacity magazines that go with them.

It doesn’t apply to handguns, hunting rifles, or shotguns commonly used for self-defense and hunting. What we’re talking about are the types of weapons that are designed to kill as many people as possible in as little time as possible.

These are the weapons we see used over and over again in deadly mass shootings.

Nothing we do can bring back the lives we’ve already lost to gun violence. But if we can take action — any action — that might save lives in the future, we should do it. This legislation can.
