Friend,

Virginia now has 15 presumed or confirmed positive cases of the novel coronavirus. First, I want to assure our residents that we are coordinating closely with local, state, and federal health officials. While our risk remains low in Richmond, I am recommending that all large events in the city be canceled or postponed until further notice.

I strongly urge every Richmonder to stay up to date on the most recent news regarding COVID-19. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website is a helpful resource: [link removed] .

According to the CDC – the majority of those who contract COVID-19 have mild symptoms with fever, cough, and shortness of breath. However, a small percentage of cases are severe, particularly in elderly people and those with pre-existing conditions such as heart disease.

Please continue to practice personal health habits:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds;
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
• Avoid touching your face;
• Stay home when you are sick.

If you are experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, call your primary care physician or an urgent care clinic before visiting treatment spaces in person. This will allow our healthcare providers to take special precautions to avoid further exposure.

Right now, it's imperative our state provides resources to boost testing for the virus and provide treatment to those already infected. I will continue to monitor the spread of the virus in Virginia and will keep you updated.
