Dear John,

Today, Senators are negotiating a supplemental funding bill and there is a risk they will accept devastating changes to the U.S. asylum process. Please contact Senator Casey and Senator Fetterman right now to say that a fair path to asylum is nonnegotiable.

Some members of Congress are using current funding negotiations to demand draconian restrictions on asylum that would eliminate or cut back on protections for people seeking refuge in the United States. They are threatening to block bipartisan funding for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan and vital support for our asylum system and receiving communities if they don’t get their way. Their proposals would reportedly change the standards of our fear screening process, making it even more difficult to apply for asylum. They have also reportedly called for broad asylum bans and for ending humanitarian parole programs, such as Uniting for Ukraine, which allow people in the United States to sponsor a vulnerable individual for up to two years.

These proposals echo some of the greatest harms of the Trump era. If they are implemented, many people will lose lifesaving access to protection in the United States.

Senators are having meetings on this today and throughout this week until the negotiations are finalized as soon as next Monday. Please write to Senator Casey and Senator Fetterman right now to say that asylum rights cannot be up for grabs.
