As I watched the Republican House Budget Committee hearing on their Social Security death panel, I had a pit in my stomach. It was exactly as bad as I feared. Then, right after it ended, Chairman Jodey Arrington suggested that MAGA Mike Johnson would make a closed-door, fast-track commission empowered to cut Social Security and Medicare a requirement for funding the government.
With the stopgap spending bills to keep the government running expiring on January 19 and February 2, we have just a matter of weeks to defeat this so-called “fiscal commission.”
This morning, the House Budget Committee held a hearing on the alleged need for a “fiscal commission”―DC speak for a fast-tracked commission to take Social Security and Medicare behind closed doors and slash them to ribbons. Just today, Social Security Works members sent more than 10,000 messages to Congress telling them HANDS OFF SOCIAL SECURITY.
House Budget Chairman Jodey Arrington must have missed the memo, because right after the hearing he proposed making continued government funding contingent on cutting Social Security.
