[2]National Nurses United

A few weeks ago, we announced our huge Patients Over Profits campaign,
including a massive national Week of Action from April 6-10th and hundreds
of petition gathering events in the lead up. But after much deliberation
among our team, we’ve decided to postpone these events in light of the
COVID-19 crisis.

We’re now planning a back-up organizing strategy in lieu of petition
gathering events, and we’re aiming to carry out these Week of Action
efforts during the next Congressional Recess from May 26th-29th. While
this sets us back, we know that health and safety are most important. But
even if we aren’t able to gather in person right now, we can’t lose our
momentum. That’s why we’re adjusting our plans to focus on digital
canvassing for the time being, and we want to invite you to a special call
to hear more about that plan.

This change in strategy due to the spread of COVID-19 is ironic to say the
least. We know that under Medicare for All, we would be responding to this
crisis in the way that other countries are: free and comprehensive testing
for all, free doses of the vaccine once made available, and the ability
for anyone who gets sick to be able to see a doctor and get treatment.

But that’s not happening right now in this country. Instead, we aren’t
responding fast enough to the crisis and are seeing the fallout as a
result. The spread of COVID-19 should motivate us all to fight harder for
Medicare for All now more than ever.

[ [link removed] ]Join us next Wednesday night on our emergency strategy call to talk
more in depth about all of this.

We know that this change isn’t easy for building political power. Talking
face-to-face with your community is the most effective way to grow this
movement for Medicare for All and build the pressure on our leaders to
reject money from big pharma and insurance lobbyists. It’s this kind of
organizing that has led us where we are today.

That’s why we’re planning on carrying out this plan by moving our Week of
Action to the last week in May during the Memorial Day Congressional
recess. We know that confronting our electeds directly is a crucial part
of this strategy and that, now more than ever, taking on the true
opposition — the corporate behemoths that have so much control over our
political system — is key to winning.

Every single exit poll in the presidential primary has shown a majority of
support for Medicare for All, even in places where Bernie Sanders was not
the victor. If the majority of the country supports Medicare for All, why
aren’t our politicians listening?

Simply put, the reason is that the corporate industries profiting off the
status quo have poured millions to corrupt our democracy and buy votes
from our politicians. This election has taught us that no matter who the
nominee is, we must continue to fight those who are bankrolling the effort
to stop Medicare for All: the pharma, for-profit hospital, and insurance
industries.

Thank you for staying with us through this tough time. Your support now
and in the next few weeks as we regroup for our Patients over Profits
campaign means the world to us.

Let’s keep fighting,

Jasmine Ruddy
