NEW STUDY: Up to 2.1 Million Construction Workers Are Illegally Misclassified by their Employers - The Century Foundation released a first-of-its-kind report on how many construction workers are being misclassified or paid off the books, costing taxpayers and workers billions of dollars in lost revenue, wages, and benefits. Employers have a legal obligation to provide various benefits and protections to their employees and pay certain taxes on their behalf. But when employers misclassify workers as independent contractors, they can significantly cut their labor costs because they avoid those obligations. These practices degrade the construction industry while cheating taxpayers and undercutting businesses and workers who follow the rules. Stan Marek, CEO of MAREK, introduces this unique report, shines a light on how worker misclassification is exacerbated by the dysfunctional US immigration system, and calls for solutions.
Chairman Arrington Delivers Opening Statement at Hearing on Fiscal Commission Legislative Proposals - Annual federal deficits have doubled just over the last year, reaching a record $2 trillion (borrowing $6 billion per day). Interest payments are the fastest growing expenditure in the federal budget, reaching almost 3/4 of a trillion dollars last year and projected to be $1 trillion next year. No responsible leader can look at the rapid deterioration of our balance sheet, CBO’s projections of unsustainable debt and deficit spending, and our long-term unfunded liabilities and not feel compelled to intervene, change course, and prevent a sovereign debt crisis before it’s too late. While our fiscal trajectory is unsustainable, it’s not unfixable. But, both parties have to acknowledge they contributed in some way, and both parties need to come to the table to work on strategies to fix it.
Punishing Law-Abiding Citizens Won’t Reduce Violent Crime - In the Senate Judiciary Committee, Senator John Cornyn rebuked Democrats’ efforts to punish law-abiding gun owners under the guise of public health. He also highlighted the implementation of his Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, which has led to more than 100 new charges against cartel members and firearm traffickers and made the single largest investment in community-based mental health care in U.S. history. “The most effective solution to firearm-related homicides and assault is effective criminal law enforcement. That means effective police, prosecutors, courts, and prisons...the other side of the gun violence issue is mental health,” said Cornyn.
