*LANSING, Mich. ?* Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced the following appointments to Detroit Financial Review Commission, State Fire Safety Board, Suicide Prevention Commission, Michigan Pharmacy and Therapeutics Commission, Michigan Board of Massage Therapy, Michigan Board of Barber Examiners, Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators, and the Michigan Civil Rights Commission. ?

Today?s appointees represent Michigan?s young professionals, communities of color, seniors, and more. The appointees announced this week build on Governor Whitmer?s work to ensure appointees reflect Michigan?s diverse population. Sixty percent of appointees are women or people of color, and the Whitmer cabinet is the most diverse in Michigan history.?

*Detroit Financial Review Commission*?

John M. Barnwell, M.D., of Detroit, is the chief of surgery and the associate vice president for medical affairs at Sinai-Grace Hospital. He is also a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at Wayne State University and Osteopathic Faculty at Michigan State University. He holds a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Medicine from Howard University. Dr. Barnwell is appointed to represent residents of Detroit for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring November 9, 2027.?

The Detroit Financial Review Commission (FRC) is responsible for oversight of the City of Detroit and the Detroit Public Schools Community District. It ensures both are meeting statutory requirements, reviews and approves their budgets, and establishes programs and requirements for prudent fiscal management, among other roles and responsibilities.??

Kenneth Herbart, of Lansing, is a senior associate and manager of specifications at Albert Kahn Associates Inc. He holds architect and State of Michigan qualified historical architect licenses. Mr. Herbart received his Bachelor of Science in architecture as well as his Master of Architecture from the University of Michigan. Mr. Herbart is reappointed to represent architects for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring on July 15, 2027.???

Andy Marceau, of Alpena, is the community risk reduction captain at the Alpena Fire Department. Previously, he served as lieutenant as well as a fire investigator for the Alpena Fire Department. Mr. Marceau is a licensed paramedic, fire inspector, and fire fighter. Mr. Marceau is reappointed to represent organized fire departments in the lower peninsula for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring on July 15, 2027.???

Patrick Phelan, of Marine City, is a licensed civil engineer at BMJ Engineers and Surveyors. He has over 21 years of experience in civil engineering and previously served as a commissioner in Marine City from 2009-2013. Mr. Phelan received his Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from Lawrence Technological University. Mr. Phelan is reappointed to represent professional engineers for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring July 15, 2027.??

Steven Densmore, of Melvindale, is the assistant fire chief of community risk reduction for the Dearborn Fire department. In this role, he oversees the Fire Marshal division, as well as the Emergency Management and Apparatus Bureau. Mr. Densmore received his Bachelor of Applied Science in public safety from Sienna Heights and a degree in communications from the School of Fire Safety at Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Densmore is reappointed to represent organized fire departments in the lower peninsula for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring July 15, 2027.???

The State Fire Safety Board assists in the development of fire safety rules covering the construction, operation, and maintenance of schools, health care facilities, penal facilities, and state-owned and leased facilities. The Board assists in the operation and maintenance of public assembly and other buildings, oversight of delegation of fire inspection responsibilities, and serves as an administrative hearing body on decisions made by the Bureau of Fire Services.?????

*Suicide Prevention Commission?*?

Brian Galdes, of Plymouth, is the superintendent for South Redford School District. Prior to becoming superintendent in 2010, Mr. Galdes worked as a principal within the South Redford School District. He received his Bachelor of Science in education as well as his Master of Science in School Administration from Wayne State University. Mr. Galdes is appointed to represent a member nominated by the Senate Majority Leader, for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring December 31, 2024. He succeeds Laurin Jozlin who has resigned.??

The Suicide Prevention Commission was signed into law in 2019 and became effective March 19, 2020. The Commission works with state departments and agencies and nonprofit organizations to research the causes and possible underlying factors of suicide in Michigan.?

Dr. Bradley J. Uren, M.D., of Pinckney, is an attending physician and a clinical assistant professor of emergency medicine at the University of Michigan.? He earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan Medical School. Dr. Uren is appointed as chair for a term commencing November 20, 2023, and expiring at the pleasure of the Governor.??

The Michigan Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee advises the Department of Health and Human Services on issues affecting prescription drug coverage for its various health care programs. The Committee shall recommend to the Department guidelines for prescription drugs covered in its various health care programs.??

*Michigan Board of Massage Therapy?*?

Jamel Randall, of Southgate, is a certified yoga teacher and licensed massage therapist at The Trap Yoga and Massage Studio in Lathrup Village, Michigan. Randall attended the National Institute of Technology, Dearborn, for massage therapy and graduated in 2004. He also attended the International Thai and Therapeutic Massage Institute for Thai massage training in 2012 and LifePower Yoga Teacher Training for Yoga Teacher training in 2015. Jamel Randall is reappointed to represent licensed massage therapists for a term commencing January 1, 2024, and expiring December 31, 2027.*??*?

Kristin Brooks, of Okemos is a yoga instructor at Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center and at Hilltop Yoga. Brooks holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Policy from Michigan State University and a Master of Public Policy from the University of Michigan. Kristin Brooks is reappointed to represent the general public for a term c commencing January 1, 2024, and expiring December 31, 2027.*??*?

The practice of massage therapy means the application of a system of structured touch, pressure, movement, and holding to the soft tissue of the human body in which the primary intent is to enhance or restore the health and well-being of the client. The Board of Massage Therapy consists of 11 members: 7 massage therapists and 4 public members. Each member serves 4-year terms.??

De?Angelo Smith, of Shelby Township, is the lead instructor at the Michigan Barber School in Detroit, Michigan. He also is an entrepreneur and business owner at Executive Cuts & More LLC. Smith attended the Michigan Barber School in 2003 and earned his barber's license. He further went on to earn his barber instructor license in 2019. De?Angelo Smith is reappointed to represent barbers for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring September 30, 2027.?

The Michigan Board of Barber Examiners was created under Article 11 of Public Act 299 of 1980, as amended, to regulate the services of barbers, barber students, barber colleges, barber instructors, student instructors, and barbershops in Michigan. The Board consists of 9 members: 6 barbers and 3 public members, each serving 4-year terms.?

Marie Patrick, of Ashely, is a nursing home administrator at Holt Senior Care and Rehab Center where she has worked since 2006. Patrick holds a bachelor's degree in nursing from Kent State University and an associate degree in nursing from Montcalm Community College. Marie Patrick is reappointed to represent nursing home administrators for a term commencing November 30, 2023, and expiring June 30, 2027.??

The Michigan Board of Nursing Home Administrators was created under Article 19 of Public Act 299 of 1980, as amended, the Occupational Code, to license nursing home administrators in Michigan. Underlying all duties is the responsibility of the board to promote and protect the public's health, safety, and welfare. The Board implements this responsibility by ascertaining minimal entry-level competency of nursing home administrators. The Board also has the obligation to take disciplinary action against licensees who have adversely affected the public's health, safety and welfare.??

Portia Roberson, of Detroit, is the CEO of Focus: HOPE, a 55-year-old organization with a focus on workforce development and education. Previously she served the City of Detroit as the Group Executive for Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity. Roberson earned her bachelor?s degree in English at the University of Michigan, and juris doctor at Wayne State University Law School. Portia Roberson is reappointed to represent democrats for a term commencing January 1, 2024, and expiring December 31, 2027.?

Zenna Faraj Elhasan, of Dearborn, is the general counsel at The Kresge Foundation and serves as secretary for the foundation?s board of trustees. She is responsible for managing the overall legal affairs of the foundation, supports the development and enforcement of foundation policies and practices, supports the board on governance matters and manages outside counsel relationships. Elhasan earned a bachelor?s degree in biology from University of Michigan-Dearborn and her J.D. from University of Detroit Mercy School of Law. Zenna Faraj Elhasan is reappointed to represent democrats for a term commencing January 1, 2024, and expiring December 31, 2027.?

The Michigan Civil Rights Commission was created by the Michigan Constitution of 1963 to carry out the guarantees against discrimination articulated in Article I, Section 2.? The Commission is charged with investigating alleged discrimination against any person because of religion, race, color or national origin, genetic information, sex, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record, and physical and mental disability.?
