Hi John,

The response to a potential pandemic is to lead with science, not fear or partisan spin.

The White House and our elected officials need to empower the doctors, scientists, and public health officials whose job it is to keep us safe. Most of all, we need a government the people can trust to deliver facts.

I know there is a lot of confusion around coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and there are already several cases in Suffolk County. That’s why I’m reaching out to you now to ensure you, your family, and your community have accurate and up-to-date information to protect your health.

We know that the symptoms of COVID-19 include a fever, cough, and shortness of breath -- and we know that this respiratory illness is spread through person-to-person contact.

Here are several steps recommended by the Centers for Disease Control that you can take to prevent the spread of illness:
  • Clean your hands often by washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds -- especially after being in a public place, blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Use a hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not readily available.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick -- this is an especially important step for anyone who is at a higher risk of getting sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home (except to get medical care).
  • Call your doctor before going into their office.
  • Wear a facemask only if you are sick.
  • Cover your sneeze and cough -- and wash your hands after.
  • Clean and disinfect your space and frequently touched surfaces.
You can stay up to date on the COVID-19 emergency at The Centers for Disease Control website

I wish you and your family health.

-Nancy
