No Kid Hungry
Dear John,

In these challenging times we hope and trust you are taking measures to protect yourself and your loved ones. As a dedicated supporter of our work we wanted to let you know the steps No Kid Hungry is taking to get food to the kids who need it.

Nearly 22 million low-income kids from communities across the country rely on the free and reduced-price meals they receive at school. For many, these meals may be the only nutritious food that they'll receive on a given day.

Across the country, many schools are either closing or weighing the option to do so. And that means vulnerable children may be left without a critical lifeline to healthy meals.

Meanwhile, we wanted to let you know the steps No Kid Hungry is taking to get food to the kids who need it.
  • Spurring Government Action

Federal nutrition programs like SNAP and school meals are the front line of defense for fighting child hunger. No Kid Hungry has delivered detailed recommendations to the Secretary of Agriculture pressing the USDA to provide flexibility in how kids access meals when schools are closed. We are also in touch with members of Congress to make sure struggling families who rely on federal nutrition programs have the resources they need.

  • Coordinating with Schools and Communities

Today, No Kid Hungry distributed guidance and best practices for schools to help hungry kids get the food they need if a school is closed. This guidance builds on our years of experience working with schools across the country to deliver healthy meals to the kids who need them.

  • Here are a few ways to stay up to date with the most relevant information.

The first thing you can do right now is to make sure you and your loved ones stay safe. If you haven't seen them, here are the risk-assessment guidelines of the Centers for Disease Control and travel guidelines from the U.S. Department of State.

And please learn more about the potential impact of the virus on child hunger. Read our deeper dive into No Kid Hungry policy solutions and recommendations for schools and meal programs to help communities meet the needs of low-income families and kids.

I also want to assure you that our organization is in a strong position to lead and serve as we make sure the children of this country have the nutrition they need no matter what the future may hold.

John, there will be more for all of us to do in the coming days. We will be in regular touch with you and other members of the No Kid Hungry community in efforts to engage elected leaders, educate the public, and raise the funds that help schools and communities meet the unprecedented demands of the moment.

And a final note, if it weren't for your support, we would be unable to mobilize so quickly and in so many ways to address the needs of hungry children. So on behalf of the children who will have access to the food they need in the coming weeks in part because of your generosity, our deepest thanks.

Please stay safe. Thank you for all you do for hungry children.

Tom Nelson
