Friends,

The Trump administration’s response to the coronavirus is frustrating, inept, and wildly unacceptable -- but unsurprising from a president who has tried to cut CDC funding in every single budget he’s proposed. The virus has laid bare many of the cracks in our system, especially for working families, the elderly, and those with disabilities.

Congress passed an $8.3 billion emergency spending bill to help fight the spread of coronavirus. We’re also working to expand sick leave and healthcare access -- which are always necessities, not just in times of crisis. And when we win in November, we’ll be able to rebuild the CDC and our global health response.

But there’s something else we’ve seen in how people respond to this crisis that we need to address now as well. Various news outlets are using images of Asian Americans as a racist, fear mongering shorthand for the spread of coronavirus. And now we’re seeing it from Congress and the White House.

Rep. Paul Gosar, in announcing he had to self-quarantine after potentially being exposed, called it the “Wuhan Virus.” House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy called it the “Chinese coronavirus,” and President Trump praised a tweet calling it “China virus” and suggested this was why we “need the Wall more than ever.”

Words like these only lead to even more discriminatory words and acts, and they know that. They have made xenophobia and racism a central tenet of their party.

We await their apologies to the nation and especially to the Chinese-American and AAPI communities. And while we wait, we’re organizing for November.

Thank you,
Grace
