THE WEEK'S BIG 3

A new ADL report in partnership with Hillel International finds that 73 percent of Jewish students and 44 percent of non-Jewish students have seen or experienced antisemitism since the start of the 2023-2024 school year. As the Israel-Hamas cease-fire continues to hold, more hostages are expected to be released. Pro-Palestinian supporters at an Oakland City Council meeting defended Hamas during a debate on a resolution calling for a permanent cease-fire with many denying the atrocities committed by the terror group on Oct. 7.

Read on for more on these headlines, news you can use to fight hate and the latest info about ADL from around the country.

Latest Hostage-for-Prisoner Exchange Completed as Truce Deadline Looms

“International mediators were pushing on Thursday to lock in another temporary extension of the cease-fire in Gaza between Israel and Hamas, seeing it as the best way to ease the embattled territory’s humanitarian crisis, secure the release of more Israeli captives from Gaza and slow the war’s rocketing death toll for at least a little longer.” The New York Times:

We’re relieved that another group of hostages has been released - 10 Israelis, 4 Thai nationals & 2 Russian nationals. Our concern for the fate of the remaining hostages continues to grow, especially given reports concerning the Bibas family. 10-month-old baby Kfir, 4-year-old Ariel & their parents Yarden & Shiri were kidnapped from their home on Oct 7. Hamas has now stated that the mother & 2 young children have been killed. While this has yet to be verified, our hearts go out to the entire Bibas family. The cruelty of Hamas & its collaborators knows no end. How can anyone look at the picture of baby Kfir & not be horrified by the terrorists’ depraved inhumanity?

Anger as Oakland Residents Defend Hamas and Deny 7 October Attack at Council Meeting

I was shouted down in Oakland for condemning Hamas. The councilmembers did nothing to stop it (The Forward – Teresa Drenick, Op-Ed)

Multiple people at an Oakland City Council meeting not only refused to condemn Hamas & its terrorist activities, but also praised these acts as “resistance,” while simultaneously denying they ever took place. If you ever wondered how people could flat-out deny the Holocaust – the most extensively documented genocide in history – look no further than this video. And if these individuals so wholeheartedly support Hamas, why won’t they believe the mass murder, kidnapping, rape & torture of civilians, which Hamas so proudly recorded for the world to see? This is what being brainwashed looks like. This is what deranged hatred of Jews looks like.

Thank you, @SenSchumer, for speaking forcefully in Congress and in @nytopinion about the fear Jews are experiencing today, and the need for all Americans to denounce antisemitism in all of its forms so that our nation can defy the course of human history.

.@UMich made the right decision to cancel the student vote today. Students violated University of Michigan policies, and the University must conduct a thorough investigation. From the beginning, this effort pitted students against one another and intensified hate at a time when Jewish students on campus were already vulnerable. The University of Michigan must now focus on bringing the community together.

We are aware of the tragic shooting of three college students of apparent Palestinian descent last night in Burlington and share in the concern for their recovery. At a time of rising incidents of identity-based hate all too often targeting the Muslim & Jewish communities in increasingly violent ways, we join in the call to law enforcement to investigate this as a possible hate crime.
