It's the end of the month, and normally, I would be reaching out to ask you to contribute to EMILYs List before the books close at midnight. But the past two months have looked a little different than I — or any of us — expected. And, first, I want to say thank you.
As I reflect on my journey from EMILYs List to the United States Senate, I think about the legacy of my family. Of Southerners. Of hard workers. Of cotton-pickers. Of gardeners and farmers.
I think about the work of this incredible organization, which has advanced women from all walks of life into seats of power all across this country.
And I think about the day that the Dobbs decision was made public, and how I realized that my little girl was going to come home from school less free than when I dropped her off that morning.
When I got the call from Governor Newsom, I thought, I can't leave EMILYs List — we're in the middle of such important work. I can't let my mom down — she raised me to be loyal, and to finish out my commitments. I can't let my daughter down — she is so proud that I work to elect women.
But in the end, I decided I couldn't let myself down. I couldn't miss an opportunity to raise my voice to its highest volume on behalf of creating a better, stronger, more equitable future — not just for my daughter, but for all of America's children. Because that is what EMILYs List prepared me to do.
So, EMILYs List, thank you. Thank you for everything that you have done to help every elected Democratic pro-choice woman live out what no one would have thought was possible. Those of us in seats of power are fortunate to know we have the millions-strong EMILYs List community to guide us. Pushing us — or more often, pulling us — to do the hard things. Because you all have helped to build us up to do hard things.
