I want to tell you why I ran for Senate in the first place, John.

My father was a Marine and a Vietnam Veteran.

But after he lost his job in his 50s, my family burned through our savings and relied on social security programs like food stamps just to get by.

It was tough, and we might not have made it through without help.

Those experiences shaped the person I am today.

They motivated me to speak up on behalf of families like my own who need a little support to make ends meet.

And they inspired me to speak out against Republicans who want to slash critical social safety net programs that families depend on.

As a U.S. Senator, I am now in a position to do more to ensure our government puts the needs of working families over special interests – and help ensure we can all rise together.

Every day in the Senate, I do my best to advocate for working families across the country, but extremist Republicans are putting up roadblocks to our progress like never before and I need all the support I can get.
