John, Common Cause has taken legal action to urge the Colorado Supreme Court to disqualify Donald Trump from the state's ballot next year because of the insurrection he led on January 6, 2021. [1]
And ever since we announced it, the response from members like you has been nothing short of extraordinary.
It's easy to see why – this is the first time a presidential candidate has been found in court to have engaged in insurrection, and disqualifying a candidate from the ballot on this basis would be historic.
But it isn't without precedent – in fact, just last year Common Cause New Mexico helped to remove a county commissioner for his participation in the January 6th insurrection.
So let me ask you, John, if you can be barred from office for joining the armed mob that tried to overturn a democratic election – what should happen to someone who led them?
The fact is, we're taking this extraordinary action alongside our friends at CREW in response to an extraordinary moment – where a former president was willing to shred the very foundation of our representative democracy in order to hold onto power.
And even if you don't live in Colorado, I know you're just as invested as we are in making sure there's real, lasting accountability for the horrors of January 6th.
The outcome of this case could have nationwide implications – and we have a chance to ensure authoritarianism and violence do not go without Constitutional repercussions.
We simply can’t afford to allow another attempt to overthrow our elections – but the only way to ensure that is with swift and decisive legal accountability. Without it, what's to stop another attack on our democracy in 2024 or 2028?
Our country is at a crossroads, John, and I need your help to make sure we take the right path forward.
Can you rush an emergency contribution today towards Common Cause's efforts to hold Trump and every other perpetrator of the January 6th insurrection accountable?
Thanks for all you do,
Aly Belknap, Colorado Executive Director
and the team at Common Cause
