Friends — Last year, I led the charge to pass the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act — the first and only congressional action on gun safety reform in three decades. It was no easy feat, but we worked across the aisle to make this landmark legislation law. While an incredible accomplishment, it was only the start of the action we need to take to end gun violence. That’s why I’m introducing the Gas-Operated Semi-Automatic Firearms Exclusion (GOSAFE) Act — a pragmatic approach that will protect our communities from gun violence while defending the constitutional right to own a firearm for self-defense, hunting, or sporting.
Like many Americans, I am a responsible gun owner. We need policies that protect safe gun ownership while getting guns out of the hands of people who pose a threat to themselves or others. The GOSAFE Act would regulate firearms based on the lethality of their internal mechanisms. It would also regulate the sale, transfer, and manufacture of gas-operated semi-automatic weapons to get these deadly weapons off the streets while allowing law enforcement to do their job to keep communities safe. We have seen far too many tragic shootings hurt communities in New Mexico and across the country. We can and must take action to end the gun violence epidemic — and passing the GOSAFE Act would be a huge, meaningful step forward.
Thank you for raising your voice on this issue. Together, we can build on our progress to end gun violence and make our communities safer. — Martin |
