What is coronavirus?
Now called COVID-19, the acute respiratory illness that first appeared in December is caused by a new coronavirus. It is part of a large family of viruses that can cause a range of illnesses from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) to the common cold. As of March 10, there have been more than 118,000 confirmed cases in 103 countries, with at least 4,257 reported deaths.
How does coronavirus spread?
Coronavirus is transmitted through direct contact, coughing, sneezing and touching surfaces contaminated by the virus. Transmission happens most often when people are less than six feet apart. In overcrowded refugee camps, the risk is especially high, endangering thousands of the world's most vulnerable families.
How long does coronavirus last?
The incubation period for coronavirus can last up to 14 days, but most people show symptoms five or six days after being infected.
What is UNICEF doing to help stop coronavirus?
UNICEF is rushing supplies to some of the regions most affected by coronavirus. As of February 27, the UNICEF warehouse in Copenhagen had shipped 1.2 million gloves, 187,221 masks, 28,861 protective suits and 12,000 protective goggles for health workers on the front lines. UNICEF teams are also providing hygiene and medical kits to schools and health clinics, and distributing transmission prevention messages to help children and families stay safe.
How can I help?
Coronavirus is a serious global health emergency, and will require a massive coordinated effort to contain. We need to provide ongoing support to bolster fragile health systems and to deliver medical supplies where they are needed most in the coming days and weeks. You can help protect the most vulnerable families by starting a monthly donation now to support UNICEF's ongoing efforts to halt the spread of disease >>
