Flanked by members of President Joe Biden’s administration, Governor Wes Moore recently announced Baltimore’s commitment to its designation as one of the nation’s five Workforce Hubs through investments in career and technical education and training for local workers.

Martire: Project labor agreements key to Maryland’s future

In a letter this week to the Baltimore Sun, Dennis L. Martire, vice president and mid-Atlantic regional manager of the Laborers’ International Union of North America emphasized the significance of Biden and Moore's announcement earlier this month.
"It is evident from these workforce announcements that Moore does not see this funding simply as a way to build a road or bridge. Instead, he sees an opportunity to create good-paying jobs that bring Maryland’s working families into the middle class without costing the taxpayers one additional cent." Read the letter »

DC teachers union urges DCPS to come to the table on contract negotiations

The Washington Teachers’ Union says timely negotiations on a new contract are needed to address issues of teacher retention and other after-effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. As the two parties head into their third month without a contract, DCPS is dragging its feet. "We see the urgency of it,” Pogue-Lyons said. “But we’re finding that DCPS doesn’t see the urgency." Fairfax Connector’s operator and workers remain far apart in their negotiations for a new labor contract.
"Transdev’s latest wage offer was a slap in the face since its insulting lowball offer is contingent on the Union withdrawing all of its other economic proposals which include better sick leave, reduced healthcare costs, and retirement security," ATU Local 689 said in its statement. Read more »
