November update

Welcome to the Thomson Reuters Foundation’s [[link removed]] November update. In this edition, we’re spotlighting the power of pro bono and our award-winning digital news platforms. You'll also find insights from our editorial team on what to expect at COP28. If you don’t regularly receive our newsletter, you can subscribe here [[link removed]].

Championing the impact of pro bono

We're delighted to announce that TrustLaw, the Foundation’s global pro bono legal service has facilitated $29 million of expert legal advice for NGOs and social enterprises around world. That's an increase of over $10 million since last year. This remarkable achievement means that over 1,000 organisations received support to build capacity and achieve impact.

Since 2010, TrustLaw has provided essential support to the social sector. This includes facilitating groundbreaking legal research to combat issues such as climate change, and defamation guides produced in partnership with the Legal Network for Journalists at Risk (LNJAR) [[link removed]] to help journalists navigate legal measures used to silence their reporting.

Our Trustlaw team recently attended events to mark the UK [[link removed]] and Argentina [[link removed]] pro bono weeks, to celebrate the impact of this service and build connections with law firms and social sector organisations.

Celebrating our Lovie Award Wins

Context and Openly, the Foundation’s digital news platforms, have won four Lovie Awards [[link removed]] for in-depth reporting on critical issues and impactful LGBTQ+ TikTok coverage. These prestigious accolades celebrate digital innovation across Europe. Our editorial teams were awarded two Bronze Lovies and the People’s Lovie in the News & Politics categories for websites and social media.

Having recently celebrated Context’s one-year anniversary, this recognition shines a light on our editorial teams’ powerful reporting which goes beyond the headlines. One such example is this award-winning investigation [[link removed]] on the crypto-carbon market in Brazil.

Following this event, Adam Smith, Context’s Tech Correspondent, shared his takeaways [[link removed]] from the forum. This includes the impacts of generative AI products on the labour market and how climate technology could intersect with AI.

Human Rights:

COP28: Here's what to expect

COP28 kicks off today in Dubai. The need to create tangible climate solutions is more urgent than ever before and our Context team will be on the ground to cover these critical discussions.
