friend – as I write to you, I’m preparing to go to the UN climate summit, COP28, which starts today in Dubai.
Big international events like this are key opportunities to take our demands into spaces where major decisions are made. So I’m going to expose how the debt and climate crises are two sides of the same coin. And neither will go away without political action.
Today is also day 3 of The Big Give Christmas Challenge – your chance to double your impact when you donate because every pound you give via The Big Give will be doubled by our generous match funders – but only until 5 December!
Will you turn £10 into £20, £15 into £30, or £25 into £50 and make sure the demand for debt cancellation stays strong, not only now at COP28 but through into 2024 and beyond?

One of the key reasons I’m going to the climate summit is to increase the pressure on the UK government to take action on debt cancellation.
Right now, 54 lower-income countries are in debt crisis. As money is diverted into debt repayments to some of the world’s richest banks and hedge funds, many governments are left struggling to respond to the climate crisis.
In fact, when climate-driven disasters hit and people need help, many governments are faced with only one option – take on more debt. This is what happened to Pakistan when more than 20 million people needed help after last year's devastating floods.
The injustice of this becomes even clearer when we remember that lower-income countries are the least responsible for climate breakdown. That’s why we need to cancel the debt for climate justice!
Over the past week hundreds of you sent in your messages to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, telling him just that. And this week we took your voices direct to the government – projecting your words onto parliament. We won’t let the message drop.

We’ve made significant progress this year in our campaign for a new UK law that could force lenders to cancel debt. It’s now vital we keep up the pressure – and you can make that happen. Double your impact today with a donation via The Big Give.
✅ Give £10, we'll receive £20
✅ Give £15, we'll receive £30
✅ Give £25, we'll receive £50
Any amount you give will amplify our demands and turn up the pressure on MPs to act. As a small, independent organisation, Debt Justice depends on thousands of supporters like you coming together to power our campaigns. When you donate through The Big Give this week only, you can turbo-charge your support!
