On imported goods, VAT will have to be paid from CHF 150 instead of CHF 300 as previously. This is the Federal Council's way of discouraging shopping tourists. Patrick Dümmler argues that it would be wiser to abolish border protection for agricultural goods. By generally making food cheaper in Switzerland, this would make shopping abroad less attractive.
