Cop 28 – two key demands
In two weeks, world leaders are gathering in Dubai to make critical decisions about our future at COP28 — one of the most important global climate negotiations.
This year, we are heading to COP28 with two key demands: shut down the fossil fuel industry and shift our world to 100% justly sourced and implemented renewable energy.
The Biden administration will be negotiating with other countries to set the course for the future of our planet. And we need to remind him that we need strong and bold climate action now.
We are sending thousands of emails today directly to Biden’s administration demanding they commit to a 100% renewable energy future before COP28 starts. Can you add your name now?
ADD YOUR NAME »
Throughout his first term, President Biden and his administration have made some strides in clean energy and transportation. But we know that the U.S. also plays an outsized role in causing the climate crisis and is now the world’s largest producer and exporter of fossil fuels, outpacing Russia and Saudi Arabia.1 Meanwhile, climate impacts continue to intensify — including dangerous flooding in the UAE where COP28 is being held.2
So to prevent further climate chaos, we need to keep up the pressure on Biden and his administration to accelerate the global energy transition by being a true champion for a 100% renewable energy future.
As we approach COP28, let's build on this momentum and advocate for an equitably sourced and distributed renewable energy system.
Sign our petition to ask President Biden’s administration at COP28 to aim for 100% renewable energy, contributing to a global push for a just energy future.
Thank you for working towards securing a livable, thriving planet for generations to come.

STOP THE MONEY PIPELINE (STMP) and THIRD Act ~
Citi is the second-largest funder of fossil fuels in the world, the largest American funder of coal, and one of the largest funders of projects that violate human rights and Indigenous sovereignty. Costco is in a pickle (and we’re not talking about free samples) because it has a credit card partnership with Citi. To move Citi off of fossil fuels, we need some of Citi’s biggest clients to demand change. As the third largest retailer in the US, Costco, along with its vast membership base, is a massive client of Citi.
That’s where you come in: Tell Costco to drop dirty Citibank as its credit card issuer, for communities and our climate.
Costco is one of Citi’s largest credit card clients. Citi makes a lot of money from its relationship with Costco, and you know what banks care about? Money. That’s why Costco has the power to either persuade Citi to stop financing fossil fuel expansion or switch to a better credit card company that isn’t wrecking the planet. If Costco threatens to move to a fossil-free credit card provider, Citi can be motivated to clean up its act.
Costco is popular for good reasons–it’s a great store with a decent climate policy, not to mention free samples. And that’s why this petition is important: 1 in 3 Americans shop at Costco!
The Third Act Puget Sound working group—near where Costco is headquartered— started sharing its concerns about Citi with Costco over the last year. Since Costco prides itself for being responsive to what its members and potential new shoppers think, we are “going national.” That’s why we are hoping to organize thousands of Third Actors and Costco members to sign this petition and tell Costco to live up to its own motto to “do the right thing.” As a Third Act supporter in Florida told us: “I love Costco, but I love my grandchildren more.” Third Actors want a healthy future for coming generations.
|
That’s why we need Costco members and non-members alike to tell Costco: clean up your credit card.
|
If Costco considered the carbon pollution that is associated with its banking as part of its operational carbon footprint, then these emissions are its biggest single source of carbon pollution, even more than the emissions from all the energy used in Costco’s warehouse stores for lights, heating, refrigeration, and deliveries. That’s why it’s so important for Costco to partner with banks that aren’t destroying the planet.
Third Act is joining with Stop the Money Pipeline and other partners to launch the Costco: Clean Up Your Credit Card campaign. By ending its credit card relationship with Citi, Costco can step up, keep its own climate promises, and help compel Citi to stop funding fossil fuels. We know that Costco prides itself in listening to us—its shoppers and concerned members of the public—and we know that Citi listens to its big clients. Call on Costco to shop for a better credit card.
Thank you!
