Stripping Away The Power of a Vote In Mississippi ([link removed])

By Paige Anderholm

Here are some updates from today.
* The New Hampshire Supreme Court ruled ([link removed]) that courts cannot hear partisan gerrymandering lawsuits in the state. This means that politicians can gerrymander the state's congressional and legislative maps to favor one political party without any legal recourse.
* Two Republican officials in Cochise County, Arizona were indicted ([link removed]) for failing to certify the county's 2022 elections on time. The pair face felony counts of conspiracy and interference with an election officer.
* The Georgia General Assembly began its special session to redraw congressional and legislative maps after a federal judge struck down the state's maps for violating the Voting Rights Act. Get background info here ([link removed]) .
+ Yesterday, a Georgia House Committee released ([link removed]) a new proposed state House map, adding five additional majority-Black districts as ordered by a federal court earlier this month.
* Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose (R) admitted ([link removed]) that anti-abortion groups helped him rewrite ([link removed]) the language for a reproductive rights ballot initiative in an effort to keep the measure from passing. Nearly 60% of voters ended up approving the amendment.
* The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals scheduled oral argument for Jan. 23, 2024 to rehear ([link removed]) a lawsuit challenging Mississippi's lifetime ban on voting for individuals convicted of certain felonies. Previously, a panel of judges struck down the provision. Get up to speed here ([link removed]) .
