Dear Friend,

After two years of working, organizing, and advocating with freelancers across the state, I’m so proud to share that my Freelance Isn’t Free Act was signed by Governor Hochul last week!

This new law will extend crucial workplace protections to more than 2.2 million freelancers across our state, helping make sure they get paid - in full - and on time - for their work.

This could not have come at a more important time for freelance workers. It’s not uncommon for freelancers to experience contract violations, non-payment for services, and retaliation for pursuing payment claims. Nearly 75% of freelancers have reported experiencing late or non-payment, 59% of freelancers report that they live “paycheck to paycheck,” and freelancers lose, on average, $5,968 a year to wage theft. Only 28% of freelancers say that they consistently have a written contract for work. That’s why I wrote this bill and worked tirelessly to get it done.

With this bill, New York is making it clear that we won't let workers be pushed around or denied their rights — not in Brooklyn, not in Buffalo, and not anywhere across New York.

Sincerely,

Andrew
