House Republicans signaled on Wednesday that full impeachment proceedings against President Joe Biden could commence in the coming weeks. During a closed-door GOP caucus session, Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) indicated that a vote to officially initiate impeachment hearings is imminent. Emmer pointed to the White House's refusal to cooperate, citing a lack of document turnover and interview participation as evidence that the investigation must progress beyond its initial phase.
Rep. Emmer, who, as Clerk, controls the Congress schedule, follows the directives of House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA). Johnson, who recently assumed office, stated last month that President Biden's days without facing impeachment are numbered. In an interview with Fox News host Sean Hannity, Johnson referenced documents provided by Reps. James Comer (R-KY) and Jim Jordan (R-OH), asserting that they reveal instances where Biden, during his vice presidency and subsequent years, allegedly crossed legal and ethical boundaries to benefit his son Hunter and business associates, enabling them to earn millions from foreign companies.
Johnson emphasized the significance of the evidence, stating, "I believe the documents are proving all of that... the bank records don’t lie. So we have the receipts on so much of this now. It’s a real problem." He explained that the shift to the impeachment inquiry stage is based on the potential for the evidence to support impeachable offenses.
In response, the White House criticized reporters for questioning President Biden's responses about his family's business dealings and urged mainstream media outlets to focus on what they described as Republicans' "lies" about the president. President Biden, when personally asked for comment, has responded defensively to reporters questioning whether he personally benefited from his son Hunter Biden's business activities.
House Republicans have already presented evidence that President Biden received at least $40,000 from family members as a result of overseas business activities involving Hunter and his associates. Hunter Biden, facing charges of tax evasion and gun crimes, remains under investigation for potential violations related to failing to register as a foreign agent while representing foreign corporations.
